ARMORY SHOW 2015
New York, NY
Bade Stageberg Cox is celebrating its fourth consecutive year designing The Armory Show. This year’s fair builds upon the success of previous years’ designs with a clear layout and generous lounge and dining spaces punctuating the booth organization. Galleries are arranged around social spaces which are places of respite and reflection within the hubbub of the fair.
The Armory Show brings together galleries from around the world. The fair is organized as a grid of blocks, punctuated by open spaces that encourage social exchange. Arranged with simple single-loop circulation, the fair has generous lounge and dining spaces integrated into the gallery plan, making the show easier to navigate. Lounges are anchors around which galleries are organized and serve as landmarks and points of orientation.
BSC Architecture designed a series of custom locally-produced furniture projects to reinforce the distinctive experience of each lounge:
Coriolis Light is a large-scale light fixture exploring the physics of bending wood and light. Light emanates from a large wooden cylinder. Cuts in the surface suggest spinning, while allowing light to escape, casting patterns on the surrounding walls. The fixtures are hung above tables in the Hotel Americano Cafe to form an intimate dining space within the pier shed.
Estragon is a furniture piece comprised of 22 identical plywood forms, based on a character from Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. Home Made, an experimental plywood furniture project, is installed in the Pier 94 Coffee Bar.
The Planar Chairs are fabricated in plywood utilizing advanced digital tools. Deceptively simple, each chair is composed of four planes which lock together, without glue or fasteners. Street Seats, a chair installation developed by BSC for the Armory Show 2012, is installed this year in Pier 94's Mile End Deli.
Key public art installations are architecturally highlighted and lend to the identity of this year’s focus on the art of the Mediterranean and Middle East. BSC is pleased to collaborate with DWR and Tucker Robbins in the creation of the Armory Show’s lounge spaces and champagne bars.
